A few months ago, researchers gathered in Milan to exchange ideas and take the TOMATTO project forward. They were also filming scenes for a production that has not yet been released. Until now.

The documentary of the project TOMATTO has been selected for screening at the Science and Technology Film Festival in Krakow, Poland. More than 1,000 films were submitted to the festival, with 60 productions selected for the official programme. TOMATTO documentary is one of the 12 films of the Official Selection for Best Short Documentary.

Directed by Luis Gómez-Juanes and produced by IMDEA Nanociencia, the documentary “The light with the time inside” explores the scientific challenge at the heart of TOMATTO, that is capturing the motion of electrons during the first instants after molecules are hit by pulses of light. Funded by an ERC Synergy Grant, the film follows a journey between Milan and Madrid bringing together researchers working to observe and understand molecular processes taking place on extremely short timescales.

Filming took place at the Attosecond Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano, the Facultad de Ciencias Químicas of Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Supercomputing Center at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and at IMDEA Nanociencia institute’s laboratories, offices and cafeteria.

The documentary will have its world premiere at the Science and Technology Film Festival in Krakow, marking its first public screening.

The documentary has been produced as part of the dissemination strategy of the ERC Synergy project TomATTO, bringing the project’s research to audiences beyond the scientific community.
